We could have appreciated it all,

We could have let the spirits, clamped in our weatherproofs,

Magnify themselves and dance with the mountains

And the whirling wind in robes

Of rain and elemental nostalgia –

But what those busy tickertapes were telling

Was bigger water, river out of control,

The Steelhead hugging deeper

As if they were under an avalanche

Their more and more unthinkable finger-holds,

While our fishing days and our flown-in dreams

Rumbled away over them tossing driftwood,

Bleeding us downstream. Our dance was to sit tight,

Freshly sawn-off stumps, hugging our roots,

Stumps of abandoned sawn-off totem poles

At a glum remove from our enterprise

Suspended in the clouds literally,

Clouds that were dragging up and down the gorge

Simultaneously in opposite directions,

A dance that mimed the hope of hopelessness

To squalls that slapped gunshots out of the tent,

Our gossip out of our mouths, and scattered our coffee.
